A new song by an old love…

12 06 2008

How many times in your life have you heard a new song by an artist you’ve known FOREVER only to discover that they’ve completely changed their sound and it turned into a big pile of crap? I believe this has happened in my life more than once…cough cough Dave Matthews cough cough….but I had something very odd happen to me the other day.

I was sitting in my car on the way home from work and a Snow Patrol/Fray-ish song came on (which I tend to avoid since this big annoying breakup), but immediately I was hooked. These lyrics were not only extremely poetic, but also moved the music along perfectly. I was also confused as I had not heard this song before and it was already on the radio. So I kept listening, and by the end I was in love. It definitely hit me right where it hurts, but for some reason…it didn’t hurt. It felt good…like someone knew what I was thinking and just sang it for me in my car.

So who is it? Who is it? Some new singer/songwriter? Finally, the song was over and I listened for the name of the artist…O.A.R….really??!! O.A.R. had the ultimate college song, perfect for drinking games with “Crazy game of Poker”. Back then they were quite the jam band. Later I come to find out that they took all their old jam songs and turned them into 3 minute pieces of commercial crap, so I pretty much figured they were going to eventually just crumble under their own forced commercialism…guess I was wrong! The song “Shattered” is definitely much more commercial and definitely a new direction, but if everything in this new direction turns out to be half as wonderful, I’ll leave my old love behind and jump on the new bandwagon in a second. I don’t think there’s a video for it, but you can listen to it below:
